The listed status and its blind spots
On Amazon.fr, the buy button is greyed out on both boxed listings, with the note "We don't know if or when this item will be back in stock." The product pages still exist, at the same URLs. Only the status moved.
An "unavailable" status at a retailer covers several cases: an initial allocation fully committed, a line closed by the retailer, a pause during a logistics adjustment. Nobody has confirmed which one applies here. The sell-through figures doing the rounds since this morning trace back to no primary source, not a retailer, not a distributor, not the publisher. This page doesn't repeat them.
Take-Two and Rockstar Games have announced no preorder suspension. Nothing points to a manufacturing incident or a date slip. The bottleneck sits with physical-stock retailers, on the boxed format.

Allocation, the mechanism behind the word shortage
A physical-stock retailer receives a fixed volume of reservable boxes from the distributor. It opens preorders against that volume. Once the volume is committed, it closes the line and waits for the next wave. The same product can therefore flip between orderable and unavailable more than once before release.
That mechanism explains the July 27 status without needing a number bolted onto it. You will see sell-through estimates going around. Until a retailer or Take-Two publishes sales data, those estimates stay estimates, and we treat them that way.
Digital depends on no allocation
To preorder now without waiting for a reopening, go digital. These storefronts sell a download licence and handle no box volume.
- PlayStation Store (store.playstation.com): PS5 digital preorder, line open.
- Xbox Store (xbox.com): Xbox Series X|S digital preorder, same principle.
- Rockstar Store (rockstargames.com): the publisher's direct channel, digital.
What to do now if you want the boxed copy
Three options while the line stays closed:
- Come back to the site's PS5 preorder page and Xbox Series X preorder page. Their links open a live Amazon.fr search rather than a frozen listing. While the boxed line stays closed, that search may return nothing orderable: that is the retailer's real status, not a dead link.
- Sign up for the free email alert further down this page. An email goes out as soon as a boxed preorder becomes orderable again at a tracked retailer.
- Skip third-party sellers listing the game "available" at an inflated price while the line is closed. Digital (PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Rockstar Store) costs less and commits you to less.
